It’s been another week of limited fishing pressure in many parts of the state, mainly due to anglers being concerned about ice conditions. Generally, there wasn’t much ice made last week, but it didn’t deteriorate as much as one might think.January 21, 2014 at 8:06 pm #1358372. The whole family was up and most are new to ice fishing, so we spent a good portion of the time messing around on the cabin lake, which really isn't a great lake to fish ...We’re told ice conditions in the area varied. The road was re-routed and anglers in the area were notified. The Sheriff’s Office is reminding everyone out on the ice to be extra careful, consider an ATV or snowmobile rather than a motor vehicle, don’t travel on the lake after dark and carry a cell phone.Unfortunately, Ice and Snow conditions on the south end of Leech Lake have made all travel unsafe. Slush varies from 6”-24” throughout the area. Additionally, snow levels are 20”-30” deep. New cracks are frequently forming and flooding water onto the ice, probably due to the extreme weight of the snowpack. No travel is advised, of any kind.The best time to go ice fishing on Mille Lacs Lake is during the winter months when the lake is frozen and safe to access.
