The rear O2 sensor is monitoring for excess 02 in the exhaust flow, so the fault could be something upstream... even a pinhole leak in the exhaust pipe?The "official" fixes for a P0420 code are: replace the rear O2 sensor, replace the front O2 sensor and replace the cats. - Replacing the rear O2 sensor will accomplish nothing, IMHO - Replacing the front sensor is a good idea, since it is responsible for running the engine properly. Sadly, it probably won't solve the P0420 code issue.
